Can YOU be BETTER?

By Rana Wright

You’re good. Right here, right now. You’re good. BUT CAN YOU BE BETTER?

The answer is…HELL, YES!

I bet you thought I was going to say you’re perfect and don’t need to change a thing?  Sorry, I’m up on my soap box to rain down some truth bombs! Would you tell someone who’s at their lowest point they’re ok as they are right now? Of course not. We tell them it’ll get better. We encourage them to put one foot in front of the other and keeping going. We support them as they make small changes to lift themselves up.  The same concept can be applied to this exact moment in your life.  You can and should assess yourself on a constant basis. It’s how we become better each and everyday.

We’re human.  As humans, we’re fabulously flawed. I like the word ‘fabulously’ because I’d rather see my flaws as fabulous. I don’t necessarily like my flaws and, I’d rather not have them.  Do you feel the same way?  No such luck.  We all have them, and you know what? My flaws make me who I am, AND they keep my ego in check. They challenge me to be and do better.   My flaws give me reason to continue to strive to improve.

So, how do you better yourself on a constant basis?

You start with changing or doing one new thing. But…but…but…change is scary. Is that what you are thinking?  Yep, it sure it is. That’s why you start small. In fact, you should set the bar at a level that’s attainable. I mean, we can’t all be LeBron James, can we? Even he wasn’t born the super star he is today. You start with baby steps towards becoming the best version of YOU.  It’s not the size of the change we make that matters. It’s making the decision to take those flaws and turn them into strengths that matters.

Maybe it’s one small task you do everyday to better your life.  My husband likes to make our bed first thing in the morning. This one simple act sets him up for success for the rest of his day. It’s an easy task he’s accomplished right off the get go. He starts the day feeling fantastic.

One of the steps I take is to brush my teeth and drink a glass of water first thing in the morning. When I do this, my body wakes up immediately. My mouth feels fresh and my cells feel hydrated! Yay, me!

I’m also upping the ante on my running game for an upcoming Spartan race in September.  My legs don’t like hills and build lactic acid quite fast.  So, I’ve started training with a weighted vest to make sure I can withstand the assault my legs are sure    to endure. This is my step to becoming better at running up a mountain.

Do you have a goal to get fit?  How do you get there?

Incrementally!

Inch by inch you work your way to the desired objective.  Say you want to walk 5K. You might go about it like this:

  • You set the goal.
  • Write it down.
  • Put it somewhere you see it ALL THE TIME.
  • Set a start date.
  • Set a “Yahoo I did it” date aka a date you will walk 5K.
  • Tell someone about the goal if you like. Your spouse or partner, a friend, or neighbour and ask them to keep you accountable. We tend to get shit done when we’re accountable.

So, you’ve set your goal, written it down, and possibly told someone about it.  What’s next?

ACTION IS NEXT!!

  • Day 1 – Get up off the couch, put on your sneakers and walk to the end of block and back.
  • Day 2 – Walk to the end of the block and around the corner and back.
  • Each day, you slowly build on the distance you walk.

Before you know it, YAHOOO – you’ve walked 5K.  High five to you my friend!

Maybe you’d like to eat healthier? Through Idealistic Isabel, I start my nutrition clients with small steps as well.  Even if they’re experienced or advanced in their nutrition, I still start them at the beginning.  It never hurts to make sure your foundation is solid.

  • First, they start by tracking what they eat using MyFitnessPal, a food journal or photos.
  • Then, we talk about healthy, whole foods.
  • Next, we talk about meal prep and how to set yourself up for success.

Each week we build on what they’ve learned from the week before.  We set the bar at a level that’s realistic and reachable.

I have a client who sends me photos of her meal prep and meals during the week.  This works for her to stay accountable. We chose this step together, as a team. And guess what? It’s working.  She’s bettering herself everyday by making healthy choices for snacks and meals.

This isn’t a competition though. It’s not about being better than other people. You don’t need to compare yourself to anyone else.  It’s about being better than YOU were yesterday. You need only to be able to look in the mirror and be proud of who you see smiling back.

Step outside of your comfort zone.  Take a small step to do one thing better today than you did yesterday.

What small step or change are YOU going to make today?

Love,

Rana

I’d love to guide on the journey to taking those small steps. If you are ready for change, email “Hell, Yes! Nutrition with Rana” to info@idealisticisabel.com.
